Special effects, at the time of interpretation of the songs, an impressive scene, a grading table to make use of virtual reality ... all made in the 41st Eurovision Song Contest show both unique and innovative. Indeed, transmission of the vote was the largest transmission time using technology virtual reality, in the world until then.
Also, for the first time created a special website for the competition from the NRK. The Morten Harket, singer of the famous band A-HA, and journalist Ingvild Bryn, presented the Eurovision 1996 and for the first time we use cheilofonou from the performers.
The coordinator of the EBU for the competition and scrutineer, Christian Clausen, delivered in Christine Marchal-Ortiz. The system changed exclusion. This time the 29 countries wishing to participate in the competition, apart from organizing Norway, passed through a preliminary round, two months before the Eurovision 1996, where 30 national committees listened entries and voted the 22 best qualified for the final, in Oslo. The committees were composed of 8 judges. The excluded countries were Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Macedonia, Romania and Russia.
For the first time, France was involved with a song in dialect Breton. Something similar happened with Austria, represented by a song in dialect vorarlbergeois.
Nobody expected a fourth victory for Ireland in five years, however, Ireland won, much to the surprise of all.
