Disease like AIDS kills wild chimpanzeesUltimately destroyed the impression of scientists that chimpanzees do not manifest symptoms of the immunodeficiency virus in monkeys, that the HIV virus that affects humansAmerican research team has identified wild chimpanzees in Tanzania who died from an illness similar to AIDS. The research, published in Nature, reveals a «missing link» the evolution of human pandemic AIDS, independent experts to comment on the website of the magazine. The immunodeficiency virus in monkeys (SIV) is known for decades and is believed to be ancestor of the human virus HIV. Many species of monkeys, such as African green monkeys, infected by the virus without showing symptoms. Until now, scientists thought that the same is true for chimpanzees, and even hoped that genetic comparison chimpanzees and humans will reveal the Achilles heel of HIV. These cases are ultimately destroyed. In collaboration with Jane Gkountal, pioneering study of chimpanzees, Dr Beatris Hahn of the University of Alabama at Birmingkcham began in the 1960s to monitor wild chimpanzees of the National Parkot Gkompe Tanzania. Data covering the last nine years have shown that 9-18% of the population was infected with SIV. Chimpanzees that died underwent autopsy, which showed signs of disease similar to human acquired immune deficiency syndrome: low levels of T-cells CD4 cells in the immune system, opportunistic infections and a dramatic loss of muscle mass. The research highlights a risk faced by chimpanzees in nature, but would open a new way to study deadly diseases. For example, scientists can now compare the effects of SIV between different species of apes in order to discover vulnerabilities of the virus. |
